Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the right to question certain rulings made by the official, mirroring the practice currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
