Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users using such medications need to be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
People who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of appetite.
"It felt as if something activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This challenge is compounded if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
