This Dramatic Portrait
In the struggle between faith and wealth, it's a knockout win for greed in Showalter's wonderfully garish true story regarding the shamed TV preacher and her felon spouse. Andrew Garfield plays the greedy Jim, who states at the beginning, claiming divine approval for wealth. He and Tammy Faye set about monetising the American public's spiritual convictions. It's an extravaganza of bad interior design, overdone appearance and hypocrisy, yet Chastain achieves to depict the character with compassion. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, on Film4
