EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
